Milky Way Study #1

I'm posting this primarily to see what it looks like on screen. I find the screen highlights all the flaws(or successes)in a piece. This was all done with black and white pastel, blk/wht charcoal and white charcoal shavings. Man, I sure make a mess with pastels! My hat's off to all the pastel artists out there that create such gorgeous work. I also forgot how bad Krylon fixative smells.

Any critiques are more than welcome! I can always use them when working from imagination. Imagination is a wonderful thing. You can take many liberties with perspective, lighting, etc. but I still want the piece to make some sort of sense to the eye. Keep in mind this is just a rough idea of the concept. The cats aren't well developed. I'm still trying to decide if I want them all white or not. I'm not even sure this will be my final concept.

If you look carefully you can see I have one cat on the very top that I chose to ignore. I think three cats will be sufficient for this project but I left the outline just in case I change my mind.

Billie this is positively magical! I'm a sucker for anything with moon and stars in. Can't wait to see this!

Billie, I love surrealism and I think this is going t be a very successful piece. I like the cat just outlined, too.

Ok, if I were to be picky, I'd say the bodies of the cats should have more curve to them, and I'd think a lot about where to place the stars in the sky. I'm a cat lover, and I love the moon, so stuff along these lines appeals to me, and i like how you managed to get a warm cozy atmosphere with greys and black.

Yes I love the cat outline as well the fact that he/she is crouching more slyly than the others. I really like the composition as well, I just wonder if the cat jumping off of the moon might look more fluid if it were jumping from the top arc of the moon? ugh, just a thought as it would 'complete the circle' but it's placement where it is also grabs the eye so maybe that was your intention as well that he is stealing the show ;)

I really like how the water reflects and the brush on the sides makes everything feel so cozy

Yes isn't Krylon wonderful :)

Thank you, Mary. i'm experimenting and working out the details. i hope this turns out well.

Nick, thanks for the critique! i agree about the curves of the cats bodies. they need a lot of tweeking. i threw in some stars when i did the study w/o much thought to placement. right now my biggest hurdle is figuring out how to render a nice, crisp cresent Moon in a dark sky. masking fluid didn't work. i'll be trying frisket film next.

Tracey, thanks for adding your comments as well.:) interesting that you like the 4th cat! i may find a place for it afterall. i considered having the cat jumping from the top of the Moon but it threw the comp off.

Krylon fixative...YUCK! i had a headache all day from those fumes.:(

right now i have to go shovel snow. *mad face*

thanks, Ron.:) some like that top cat. unfortunately, i didn't include it in my painting which is still a WIP. lots of problem solving with this one so it's taking time. i'm realizing now i should've practiced painting landscapes and water. cripe!
